Nelson... a place where life is unhurried and people say "hello" to strangers. It's a town where time has seemingly stood still. Turn-of-the-century ambiance lingers in every corner from the 350 preserved heritage buildings to the fully restored streetcar. But, don't let the quiet fool you. Here on the shores of the giant Kootenay Lake, you'll find a world-class recreational playground with all the comforts of today's amenities, and lots of exciting things to do and see for all ages. Open House

The City of Nelson is hosting an open house on Thursday, March 4th to give the public the opportunity to review the proposed 2010—2014 Financial Plan. This is a great opportunity to learn about City finances – both the operating and capital budgets! Council is proposing a 1.5% increase in taxation in 2010 and a $4.9m capital program for 2010. Council will consider all public feedback received before adopting the five year financial plan.

The public is encouraged to drop by City Hall (2nd Floor, 310 Ward Street) between 1:00—8:30 pm to talk to staff and Council members about city operations, utilities, the capital program, the Corporate Carbon Emissions Plan and the results of the Citizen Survey. Between 1:00-6:30, council and staff will be present to answer questions on a one on one basis about any of the City’s operations.

At 6:30 pm, staff will formally present the proposed financial plan, which includes a provision for a 1.5% tax increase and a summary of the results of the Citizen Survey. The Corporate Carbon Emissions Plan will also be introduced at this presentation. The financial plan presentation will be informative and comprehensive – with the goal of providing relevant information that will help individuals understand the City’s budget and the process Nelson City council follows to develop the plan. City staff will answer questions from the audience following the presentation.

1:00 – 6:30 pm Open House (come by to talk to Council and staff on a one-to-one basis)

6:30 – 8:30 pm Formal Presentation and Questions – Proposed Financial Plan and Corporate Carbon Emissions Plan

For further information on the Open House or the proposed five year financial plan, contact Linda Tynan, Director of Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer at 250.352.8235
