[ARCHIVED] Update: Watermain Extension for Selous Creek

July 31 2020

The Great Northern Trail, in both directions of the Mountain Station parking lot, remains open as construction crews work at Mountain Station reservoir replacing pipes and structures dating to the 1920s and ’30s. The majority of the works are now on City property adjacent to the reservoir which is behind temporary construction fencing and permanent security fencing. The impact on the public over the next couple of weeks will be minimal.

Future work will include mobilizing equipment to the Hoover Street right-of-way (ROW), working alongside the Telus and Nelson Hydro utility pole line. The work is scheduled to commence mid-August, with equipment likely arriving the week of August 10 - 14. Once the works commence on the Hoover Street ROW, the Great Northern Trail immediately below the ROW will be subject to closure for public safety as heavy equipment will be working on steep slopes immediately above the trail. Notices will be posted in advance of the closures prior to work commencing above the trail.

For the upcoming week, detours or closures of the roads or trails are not contemplated; however, the road and parking areas adjacent to the reservoir will be occupied with materials and equipment and remains a very busy work site. Please be mindful of the construction zones, traffic control personnel and all construction signage.

This photo was taken at the Mountain Station reservoir looking at a new valve install. The photo provides an idea of the size of the trenches, valves and water pipes used for this project.
