City of Nelson mobilizes in support of Provincial E-Bike Rebate Program – Partners with West Kootenay Cycling Coalition for Go By Bike Week
NELSON, BC - The City of Nelson is taking proactive steps to encourage healthy alternatives to single-passenger vehicles. As part of its ongoing efforts, the City is proud to have worked alongside the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in support of a Provincial E-Bike incentive program.
The City of Nelson launched the E-Bike Financing Program in the summer of 2020 and has since distributed over 150 loans to Nelson Homeowners. The program is designed to promote a healthy alternative to driving and decrease the climate impact of transportation in Nelson. The City was the first municipality to launch a commuter bicycle Financing Program in the Province. Since then, incentive programs have begun launching across BC.
During the development of the Provincial Incentive program, City staff engaged with the Province to share lessons learned and program metrics that helped inform the design of the new rebate program. Advocating for increased EV and bicycle rebates and incentives from other levels of government is a priority tactic within the City’s Climate Plan, Nelson Next.
‘“The City of Nelson is a leader in creating innovative programs – like our E-Bike Financing Program – and is proud to have contributed to this important initiative,” says Mayor Janice Morrison. “We have very ambitious climate aspirations in Nelson, and it will require action from all levels of government to achieve them. We are very happy to see the Province stepping up this way.”
Provincial Income Qualified E-Bike Rebate Program
The new Provincial Income-Qualified E-Bike Rebate Program will launch June 1st, 2023 and will provide rebates of up to $1400 toward the purchase of an E-Bike. The Program will be administered through the Scrap-It Society and will be based on per-person income levels.
Nelson homeowners who participate in the Provincial Income-qualified E-Bike Rebate Program will also be eligible for the City of Nelson’s E-Bike Financing Program.
