Hall Street Update September 4 - 7, 2018
The focus for McNally Excavating this past week has been near the gazebo, west of the Prestige. Electrical conduit and base prep was followed by the placement of concrete and sidewalk toward the end of the week. Next week, the majority of the work will remain focused on the area near the gazebo, where access to the City wharf and promenade above the marina will be difficult at times. Pedestrian access near the gazebo remains possible, delineated by construction fencing, but vehicle access to this area is likely to be limited to scheduled deliveries only. The newly paved and lined parking lot to the south of the gazebo is available for free use until a new payment kiosk is functional. A new EV charging station is also erected in the parking lot, but it is likely a few weeks away from being energized. Stay tuned for an update on the charging station.
Sunsmith Design, the designer of the custom railing for the foreshore steps met with City staff this week and has final measurements for the fabrication of the railing. The railing is scheduled to be on-site for erection in October.
Marwest Industries, working at the intersection of Hall and Front Street, has made considerable progress with installation of large diameter storm sewer manholes and pipes this past week and will start backfilling and bringing compacted gravels back to the surface. Next week the focus for Marwest is to concentrate on restoring the surface in the 100 block of Hall Street so as to install curb, gutter and sidewalk. To facilitate this work, construction fencing and temporary sidewalks will be relocated so as to maintain pedestrian access. Once curbs are installed, a lift of pavement is to be installed on the north side of the intersection. This paving will help facilitate a change to the traffic management pattern on Front Street, likely the week of September 10, and allow Marwest to proceed to the south side of the intersection.
The City would like to remind residents that the businesses remain open and that access to Gateway Plaza and 625 Hall Street is from Lakeside Drive via the Cedar Street detour route. The City also requests that drivers and pedestrians utilize caution while traveling through this busy area and to follow the signs and direction provided by the flaggers.

These manholes don’t look like much to most folks, but for construction workers, it’s almost like art work.
These photos show the ‘benching’ inside manhole F2. A considerable amount of effort is required inside each manhole in order to bench them properly to facilitate flow and provide for ease of maintenance. Once the lid and manhole casting is placed on top of the manhole, and the trenches back-filled and road paved, the only thing most people see is the manhole cover. These pictures show there is a lot of time spent making the inside of manhole; a place most people would never see and a functional component of the storm sewer system.
