Participate in The Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute’s Resident Survey on Backyard Food Production and Emergency Preparedness

The Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) at Selkirk College is conducting a short survey around backyard food production and emergency preparedness to help understand how prepared Nelson residents are for some of the impacts of climate change.

Completing this survey will help measure and assess the status of two important indicators of climate adaptation specific to residents in Nelson and other communities in the Columbia Basin:

Growing food in backyards, which is an important aspect of self-sufficiency and local food security; and

Having an emergency preparedness kit, which is an effective way to ensure basic supplies and important documents are together and ready to go in case of an emergency, such as forest fire or flood.

This resident survey will help inform a much larger two-year climate adaptation capacity building project involving nine local governments in the Columbia Basin, delivered by the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute at Selkirk College, with funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

While not connected, this survey is being distributed in advance of upcoming research and engagement related to the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Plan for Nelson.

“We look forward to seeing how the results of The RDI’s survey will inform our upcoming Climate Change Plan,” says Pam Mierau, Director of Development Services with the City of Nelson. “We will be out in the community conducting further, localized research related to Nelson’s climate risks and impacts in the fall and early next year, so stay tuned!”
