Civic Centre Structural Roof Concerns; Public Safety a Top Priority

Nelson, BC – The Civic Centre is a hub of community activities and services and has long been a cornerstone of our community. In preparation for planned renovations, the City and its project management team have been assessing the Civic Centre's structural integrity. During the assessment, it was identified that the original design of the wooden trusses supporting the Civic Centre's roof does not meet current minimum building code snow loading limits. The City has developed a comprehensive plan to mitigate any potential risks to the building and its users.

"The safety and well-being of our community members are paramount to us," says Mayor Morrison. "We are taking these concerns seriously and working diligently to address them. The Civic Centre has been a vital part of our city for generations, and it will continue to be a safe and welcoming space for our residents."

The plan will combine forecasting, monitoring, visual inspections and regular communications with the organizations within the Civic Centre to ensure the continued safe use of the space. If conditions occur that exceed the identified load, the building will be closed until the conditions have been mitigated or reduced.

In light of this possibility, we want the community to be aware of the situation and ask for understanding in the event the building is required to close due to adverse weather conditions. Again, this plan has been developed to ensure the building is safe to occupy when it is open to the public. We encourage you to continue to support the various activities in the Civic Building Complex. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the continued safety and vibrancy of the Civic Centre.

Note: We would like to clarify that the assessment and mitigation measures mentioned in this media release do not pertain to the Civic Arena Ice Rink.
