Arrest for Impaired Driving Leads to Seizure of Controlled Substances

On January 11th at approximately 1530 hrs, officers with the Nelson Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of 398 Baker Street, Nelson BC, as part of ongoing impaired‑driving enforcement within the community. During the interaction, officers observed signs consistent with impairment. The 29‑year‑old male driver was arrested for impaired driving and held pending an evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

Following the arrest, officers conducted a search of the vehicle. The following quantities of suspected controlled substances and currency were located and seized:

  • 583 grams of suspected cocaine
  • 46 grams of suspected methamphetamine
  • 53 pills of suspected Xanax
  • 60 doses of suspected Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
  • 5 grams of suspected fentanyl
  • Over $4000 in Canadian currency

Based on the evidence recovered, the male was chartered and warned for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The male was transported to the Nelson Police Department, where he was evaluated by the department’s newest Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). At the conclusion of the evaluation, the DRE determined that the male’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by a drug. A bodily sample was subsequently obtained pursuant to the investigation.

This matter remains under active investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.

Nelson Police Department – Community Safety Update

Nelson, BC — Throughout the past week, the Nelson Police Department carried out enhanced foot patrols as part of the ongoing Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program (C‑STEP). The initiative focuses on strengthening public safety, supporting vulnerable community members, and maintaining a visible and approachable police presence in key areas of the city.

During the week‑long effort, officers engaged directly with individuals in need, offering support, conducting wellness checks, and helping connect vulnerable people with appropriate services. Members also visited numerous local businesses to listen to concerns, provide safety information, and reinforce partnerships that contribute to a safer and more welcoming community.

Patrols concentrated on high‑traffic and core community areas including Baker Street, Lakeside Park, and surrounding neighbourhoods. Officers monitored public spaces, responded to community observations, and worked proactively to deter unwanted activity while enhancing the sense of safety for residents, visitors, and businesses.

C‑STEP remains an important part of the Nelson Police Department’s commitment to community‑based policing. Through regular foot patrols, open communication, and ongoing collaboration with local partners, the program supports a safer, healthier, and more resilient Nelson.

Cold Weather Advisory – Safety Checklist for the Community

With temperatures dropping and winter conditions setting in, the Nelson Police Department is reminding all residents to take precautions to stay safe during the cold weather. Sudden changes in temperature can increase risks for vulnerable individuals, people spending extended time outdoors, and anyone travelling through the community.

Below is a Cold Weather Safety Checklist for residents, businesses, and visitors:

Personal Safety

  • Dress in layers, including a wind‑resistant outer layer and warm hat, gloves, and socks.
  • Limit time outdoors during extreme cold and take frequent warm‑up breaks.
  • Watch for signs of frostbite (numbness, pale skin) or hypothermia (shivering, confusion).
  • Keep a cell phone charged in case of emergency.
  • Check on neighbours, seniors, and vulnerable individuals who may need assistance.

For Vulnerable Community Members

  • Know where local warming centres or community support services are located.
  • Seek sheltered areas and avoid sleeping outdoors during freezing conditions.
  • Ask police officers or outreach workers for help if needed—they can connect individuals with services.

Home & Property Safety

  • Ensure heating systems are working properly; use space heaters safely and keep them away from flammable materials.
  • Prevent frozen pipes by keeping indoor areas heated and letting taps drip slightly.
  • Keep entryways, sidewalks, and steps clear of snow and ice to prevent slips.

Vehicle & Travel Safety

  • Keep vehicles stocked with winter essentials: blankets, warm clothing, flashlight, water, and a small emergency kit.
  • Clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, and lights before driving.
  • Drive cautiously—roads may be icy, especially in shaded areas and early mornings.
  • Maintain your fuel tank above half in case you get stuck or delayed.

Community Awareness

  • Report concerns about people experiencing distress in the cold to authorities.
  • Businesses and residents are encouraged to keep walkways salted and safe for pedestrians.
