Auxiliary Recruitment
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services is a composite department made up of a full-time Fire Chief and 10 career firefighters operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Auxiliary firefighters are called in when needed for larger emergency incidents (usually about 3 – 5 times per year) and community events. From time to time, the department conducts a recruitment process for additional auxiliary firefighters to keep the auxiliary numbers around 21. We provide all the required training (NFPA 1001) and protective equipment to successful applicants. Auxiliary firefighters experience emergency response training, leadership opportunities, service to their community and camaraderie in a rewarding team environment.
Auxiliary firefighters train 3 Wednesdays a month from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Current pay rates are: 0-5 years of service $16/hour; 5-10 years of service $18/hour; and 10+ years of service $20/hour. Auxiliary firefighters are paid for all training and response time on a quarterly basis.
