Safeguarding our community against the threat of wildfires involves a multifaceted strategy, emphasizing the importance of both proactive measures and collaborative efforts.  From a broad perspective, wildfire mitigation is about the steps we take as a city to reduce the impacts of wildfires in and around Nelson through managing fuels and working together with other organizations.

Fuel Management

A key element of our wildfire risk reduction strategy is our ongoing commitment to Fuel Management. This work involves the pruning of trees, removal of combustible materials, and strategic use of prescribed burns. By reducing the fuel available for wildfires, we can significantly lessen the chance of fire ignition and improve our capacity to respond effectively to any incidents.

Interagency Collaboration

Recognizing that for wildfire mitigation to be effective, it must happen across jurisdictional boundaries, Interagency Collaboration remains an important focus of our wildfire resiliency program. The Community FireSmart and Resiliency Committee (CFRC) plays a pivotal role in uniting local fire departments, land managers, government representatives, and provincial agencies in a shared commitment to wildfire preparedness and community education. In addition, Nelson Fire & Rescue Services continues to build its capacity to respond to wildfires through joint training exercises with other local and provincial agencies.
