Fire in Hume Lane

2024-7022: On Thursday, November 21st, at 12:19am, Nelson Fire and Police responded to a 911 call on the corner of Josephine St and Hume Ln, where a large fire was burning. A pallet had been lit on fire in the alleyway, which quickly spread to a wooden covered porch on the rear of a building. When First Responders arrived on scene, the flames had climbed to the roof and were over five feet tall, emitting large plumes of smoke. There were several people at the scene, including the individual who had called the fire in. None could identify how it had started.

The Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire. The wooden porch was almost entirely destroyed but the main building had sustained little damage. Thankfully, no one was injured by the fire.

After reviewing evidence, police have a strong working theory as to how the fire started. The file currently remains open.

Toxic Drugs Lead to Overdoses

2024-6968/2024-7070: There has been a pronounced uptick in overdoses this week in Nelson. An especially dangerous drug supply is presumed to be the reason for this increase.

Using alone can be highly dangerous, especially in colder weather. Narcan counteracts the effects of opioid overdose but is not effective against other classes of drugs. Many street drugs are cut with unknown substances, making overdose more likely. The Nelson Police Department urges the public to be cautious in the face of this threat.
