Police warn of identity fraud
2025-1246: The Nelson police were contacted this week by a resident who had been the victim of identity fraud, likely resulting from an internet data breach.
“Online scams and identity theft are among the most common crimes in Canada. Learning about the methods scammers use is the best way to protect yourself.” Says Special Constable Edwards.
The victim previously worked for an agency that suffered a major data breach. In August 2024, a credit card was taken out in her name without her knowledge. Over three weeks, nearly $30,000 worth of charges were incurred on the card. The victim only became aware of the fraud on March 7th, when she was contacted by a collection agency.
Police directed the victim to report the fraud to the bank’s internal investigation department and the CRA. They also advised setting up an online credit monitoring account with TransUnion or Equifax to ensure that her information had not been fraudulently used elsewhere.

Nelson parents, do you know where your teenagers are?
2025-1186/1270/1271/1272: Police responded to several calls for service this week involving groups of teenagers.
“While we like seeing youth taking time away from their phones, crime is not the right hobby to take up.” Says Special Constable Edwards.
The calls ranged from spray-painting buildings to breaking into construction sites, trying car doors at night, and stealing from vehicles. Witnesses and CCTV footage confirmed that the offenders are teenagers. It is unknown if the incidents are related or if there are multiple groups of individuals involved.
Two of the youths involved have been identified by police. Follow up actions were taken to address their behaviour.
“These types of calls take up police time and cause damages to members of the community,” says Special Constable Edwards, “We don’t want to be charging youth offenders but the behaviour is unacceptable.”
The Nelson Police Department asks that members of the community, and parents in particular, be on the lookout for these types of incidents. To report mischief, call the non-emergency police line at 250-354-3919.
